Dental Implant Basics
Dental implants are a tooth replacement solution designed to look and function like natural teeth. This restorative option is one of the most popular dentistry advances in the past few decades.
How Do They Work?
Dentures, partials, and bridges don’t offer the same aesthetic appeal and must be removed for cleaning. Dental implants are placed permanently in the jaw bone and serve as replacement roots. A tooth-colored crown is placed on the visible end of the titanium post.
Today, there are two implant options, endosteal and subperiosteal. Endosteal posts are surgically inserted into the jaw bone. The whole implant is hidden beneath the gums (besides the crown) and functions as a natural tooth. Sub-periosteal posts consist of a metal frame that slips into the bone, instead of being screwed into the jaw. This is an alternative for patients who lack sufficient bone structure for endosteal implants.
Who Are They For?
If you are missing teeth due to disease or trauma, dental implants can restore mouth function better than a bridge or removable dentures. However, not every patient with tooth loss is a good candidate. Successful dental implants require good oral health, strong bone support, and healthy gums. Once inserted, you must maintain proper dental hygiene practices.
But What About Braces?
If you require replacing missing teeth, but also need dental braces, the best approach is to first complete orthodontic treatment. Since implants are permanently fixed in the jaw, the posts will remain in place, making them the perfect anchors for surrounding teeth that need adjusting. But, they need to be in the right position to start. If not, existing posts may need to be removed and replaced after orthodontic treatment is finished.
